Researchers from Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging gave resveratrol, a natural compound found in the skin of red grapes and hence in red wine, to one year old mice to see how it would affect those fed a high-fat diet (60% of calories came from fat) compared to mice who received the high-fat diet but no resveratrol, and the control group, comprised of mice that were fed a healthy diet.
Resveratrol was found to help reduce the adverse health effects of weight gain in mice-liver damage, heart disease, and diabetes and reduce the risk of death by up to 31%. In addition to living longer, the mice that received the resveratrol performed better on tests of balance and coordination as they got older vs. the mice that received the high-fat diet only in the study.
